"There are already many books of authority which give valuable facsimiles of early title-pages, but their titles, selected for the most part to show rare books and to gratify the tastes of the librarian and book-collector, do not meet the needs of compositors. It is to supply that omission that these illustrations have been collected." (Xvii)
