As soon as Nehemiah Grew divides one plant into many, he binds them back into a single volume. In the circuitry of plant-animal resemblances, this book -- paper, quires, the page -- enters as a stoppage, transforming a process of metamorphosis into a metaphor and, in doing so, distancing human and vegetable life.
